Flat Plate Collector learning centre

FPC: durable, serviceable solar thermal engineering.

A flat plate collector converts short-wave solar radiation into heat at a selectively coated absorber, transfers it to water through risers and headers, and stores the energy in an insulated tank.

1 · Tempered solar glass

Admits short-wave sunlight and limits convective loss while protecting the absorber.

2 · Weather seal

Keeps rain, dust and humid air away from the insulated collector box.

3 · Selective absorber

Dark metal surface absorbs high solar energy while limiting thermal re-radiation.

4 · Copper header and riser circuit

The lower header distributes cooler return through bonded risers; the upper header collects heated flow.

5 · Back/edge insulation

PUF or mineral wool slows conduction through the rear and sides.

6 · Casing and frame

Provides weather protection, mechanical support and mounting points.

7 · Cold return inlet

Admits cooler tank/loop water to the lower header.

8 · Heated outlet

Carries collector-heated flow toward the tank or heat exchanger.

Passive circulation

Thermosiphon: hot water rises, cold water returns.

The tank must be above the collector. Density difference drives flow without a circulation pump; large or poorly arranged piping can stop the loop through air locks and excessive resistance.

  1. 1Sunlight heats the absorber or coated vacuum tube.
  2. 2Heat transfers into water in the collector circuit.
  3. 3Warmer, lower-density water rises toward the tank top.
  4. 4Cooler, denser water leaves the tank bottom and returns to the collector.
  5. 5Stratification stores the hottest water near the upper draw-off.
  6. 6Opening a tap draws hot water while cold make-up enters low through a diffuser.

Advantages

Why choose FPC?

  • Durable metal hydraulic circuit and serviceable connections.
  • Well suited to engineered commercial fields and indirect loops.
  • Individual collectors can be isolated, pressure-tested and repaired.
  • Good long-life option when corrosion, freeze and water quality are engineered.

Limitations

What must be engineered?

  • Usually needs more roof area than an equivalent compact ETC bank.
  • Metal circuit can freeze or corrode if the loop and water chemistry are wrong.
  • Glazing, seals and insulation must remain dry and intact.
  • High-pressure and large fields require hydraulic balancing and controls.

Complete setup

Accessories and what each one does.

Actual quantity, pressure class, pipe material and safety devices follow capacity, water quality, building pressure and the approved product data sheet.

01

Collector and mounting frame

Captures heat and fixes the approved tilt/orientation against wind loads.

02

Insulated storage tank

Stores useful heat with top hot draw-off, low cold inlet and stratification.

03

Hot/return piping and unions

Carries flow while allowing collectors, valves and tank connections to be serviced.

04

Air vent and drain

Releases trapped air at high points and enables flushing or maintenance drainage.

05

PRV/SRV, NRV and isolation valves

Control pressure, prevent reverse flow, relieve unsafe conditions and isolate equipment.

06

Expansion vessel (closed loop)

Accepts fluid expansion and stabilises pressure in indirect/pressurised systems.

07

Pump and differential controller

In active systems, runs only when collector temperature can usefully charge the tank.

08

Pipe insulation and cladding

Reduces distribution loss and protects insulation from UV, rain and damage.
